JOHN WENDEL
("Sweet, clean, family-friendly, uplifting"... There are just some of the words that describe OTHER comics out there. Not John Wendel. "Shocking, offensive and cringe-worthy" fit a little better. John has been doing comedy for a few years now and has already learned how to push the envelope like few other comics today. However, as a popular name on local shows and a TWO TIME Jester's Champion, its clear you could also use the words "Respected, admired and totally hilarious" to describe him.)
NAME: John Wendel
HOMETOWN: Nyack, NY
BIRTHPLACE: Deer Park, NY
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE....: 2010
COMEDY HEROES: George Carlin, Louie CK, Bugs Bunny, Carol Burnett, Bill Murray, Richard Pryor.
SO, I GOT YOUR NAME FROM A BUNCH OF OTHER COMICS IN YOUR AREA. IT'S
VERY CLEAR THAT YOU HAVE THE RESPECT OF YOUR LOCAL COMEDY PEERS. HOW
DOES THAT FEEL?
It feels swell. I guess I'd have to say "swell." That's how it feels.
Inside. There's a great group of up and coming comics in the area and
I'm honestly humbled that they recognize my supreme talent.
ONE OF THE REASONS YOU WERE RECOMMENDED TO ME WAS THAT YOU WERE A
TWO TIME JESTER'S COMEDY CLUB CHAMPION. DO YOU ENJOY COMPETING AGAINST
OTHER COMICS?
Not particularly. I was hoping to get stage time and that was a way to
get my foot in the door at Jester's which is a cool place to perform. I
dominated the "competition" as you call them but it was more about
trying not to embarrass them too much. I love those guys. And girl.
There's like one girl too.
WHEN I FIRST SAW YOUR VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE, I IMMEDIATELY CATEGORIZED
YOU AS A "CRINGE COMIC". DO YOU THINK THAT'S AN ACCURATE DESCRIPTION? DO
YOU ENJOY THE GROANS AS MUCH AS THE LAUGHS?
Yeah probably. I really enjoy pushing the limits of what can still be
considered funny without just being over the top. I'm pretty much a 12
year old boy on the inside, so bad words and silliness makes me giggle
down in my pee pee parts. I'm not good at being seriously.
TIME FOR A CHEAP PLUG... ARE YOU LISTENING TO THE PODCAST?
Yeah I've listened to it. I think you're off to a great start!
IT SEEMS LIKE A GENERAL OPINION ON THE AREA IS THAT THERE IS A CAMARADERIE AMONG ALL OF THE COMICS. DO YOU ENJOY BEING A PART OF A
COMEDY CREW OR WOULD YOU RATHER BE A LONE WOLF?
No, I like the crew. These guys are my friends. I'm married and not
allowed to have regular friends so they fill that need for me. They are
need fillers and I appreciate that. We joke around a lot and cry
sometimes too. Especially Dan DiMarino. Wtf is that guy always weeping
about?
YOUR PROFILE PAGE SHOWS NOT ONLY PICTURES FROM LOCAL ROOMS BUT NYC
ROOMS AS WELL. CAN YOU COMPARE OR CONTRAST THE HUDSON VALLEY COMEDY
SCENE AND THE NEW YORK COMEDY SCENE FROM YOUR EXPERIENCES IN BOTH?
I will compare but I never contrast: The NYC scene is huge and exciting.
I love performing in NY, crowds are great. The ability to get stage
time is extremely challenging until you've been pounding the pavement
for a long time. The Hudson Valley scene is smaller, but growing and
very talented. And has more trees.
MAN, WHAT IS IT WITH COMICS AND "TREES"? WHEN YOU DO HIT THE LOCAL ROOMS, WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE GUYS TO SEE ON STAGE?
I love Patrick Grable, Tom Liquori is unbelievable, There's an old guy from YouTube, a lot of funny dudes.

A great and witty mind on the scene rigyht now, John Wendel is taking this scene by storm. He was recently described on our podcast as a "steamroller" and it fits!
