I realize that I haven't posted anything in quite a while. I have been wrapped up with the H.V. Funny Podcast (which got it's start here) and various shows in the area. You can check out all that info at http:\\www.hvfunny.com and I suggest that everyone do so. Unfortunately something happened at a comedy show the other night that really aggravated me. This seemed like the forum to let it out.
I have turned a funny idea that my co-host Ian Lazarus had, the idea of being H.V. Positive, into a bit of a catchphrase and even a t-shirt idea. I devote a large portion of my local sets to being a comic from the Hudson Valley area and trying to inspire a little pride in the comedy scene locally. I have realized recently that there is a particular group that could certainly use a good dose of H.V. POSITIVITY. I'm talking, of course, about NYC comics.
This past weekend I attended a comedy competition at a local club. I went to support some friends and possibly scout out some new talent for the podcast and/or live shows. Mainly, my goal was to continue to spread the word about what I have been doing to try to promote the local comedy scene ad support the newer local talent. It became clear that the people in charge of the show were a little disorganized. The host had no idea how the judging was going to take place. There was no comic slated to go first (big surprise, no one volunteered). They had no idea how long the show was going to last but knew for sure the room was to be completely cleared out by 8:15 so they could set up for the national headliner who was doing the 9PM show.
I spent the time before the show glad-handing some of the comics I knew and introducing myself to some of the comics I didn't. I also introduced myself to the people running the room. I was pleased to find that many had heard both of me and of the H.V. Funny Podcast. Having the #1 internet comedy show in the Hudson Valley has its perks I guess. I listened to some of their experiences at local clubs and advised a couple of them about other things going on in the area (and of course handed out some business cards).
I realized that the show was going to be a bit of a mess since no one really wanted to take charge. I recommended they do a "panel of experts" judging style. I also asked around to find out who was going to light the comics and related that information to the comics who had asked. The judges they had decided upon were the girlfriend of the host (who had never evaluated a comedy competition before) and the headlining talent for the show. The headliner was an up-and-coming young female comic from NYC who told the booker she was flexible for any time they needed up to 45 minutes. I am omitting her name since I don't have her side of the story. We'll just call her JOAN...
So the show begins amidst a bit of confusion. The comics themselves are unaware of neither how they are being evaluated nor even WHO is evaluating them. I tried to remain impartial by hanging back near JOAN and the other judge. At a few points before the show, I made some suggestions to the judges about how to proceed (again since no one else had any ideas). I will agree that this was a little presumptuous of a guy that had no real affiliation with the club aside from several plugs on the show and some conversations with the bookers themselves. But I have helped to organize enough shows that I know what questions to ask and who has the answers. I took a bit of pride in being able to lend a hand on the show-running end at such a large and respected venue.
The host announced before the 2nd comic hit the stage that there were 3 judges evaluating the performance of each comic and motioned to the ladies seated together at a table and myself standing behind them. I'm not really sure they were counting me amongst the judges but I also was under the impression that my opinion couldn't hurt. After the 2nd comic got off stage, I leaned forward to comment on his stage presence. This is the interchange that followed:
ME: Hey. I thought the way he held the mic was kind of...
JOAN: (turns to me quickly) I'm sorry... Exactly WHO are you again?
ME: Oh, Sorry. I'm Steve Rifenburg. I'm a local....
JOAN: Ok are you, like, one of the judges or something?
ME: Well, I guess I am. I don't really....
JOAN: 'Cause I'm really just trying to concentrate here. Thanks.(turns again violently)
I apologized and took several steps back toward the wall. I was confused and actually scared. Everyone has been in this position at least once. You have that uncomfortable interchange with someone and can't just walk away or you risk making a bad situation worse. I waited a few sets and then slowly made my way out the back door. I was humiliated. I played it over multiple times in my head. Was she just having a really bad day? Did she think I was some kind of creep trying to hit on her? I mean I did mention my girlfriend and my son before... Was she just put off by some nobody trying to tell her how to do her job? Maybe that was it....
I don't know exactly what the reason for her curt response was. All I know is how I felt.... like dirt. I have been fortunate enough to become a bit of a name that people recognize in the local comedy scene thanks to the success of the podcast and some very supportive friends. I never imagined that people from as far away as Albany and northern NJ would want to be a part of what I was doing, but they have contacted me and asked to either be guests or for their shows to be mentioned. I have been fortunate enough to have no one in the comedy community treat me like that in a long time. Then I realized the difference. She was a CITY comic. She came up from NYC for a few hours to earn $100 bucks or so and was about to hop in the car as soon as the show was over to beat a hasty retreat. (As it turned out, she DID stay around, but just long enough to watch the 9PM national headliner's show for free before taking off). It was pretty clear that if she could have been anywhere in the world other than Poughkeepsie, she would have.
I have learned that NYC comics doing shows in our area come in 2 types:
The first is the type that LOVES the chance to finally get out of the city and make some real money. They feel that the audiences up here are ready to laugh and spend their hard earned money on a comedy show and these comics are more than happy to provide that for them. They see the chance to come up here as a privilege and sometimes even as a RELIEF from the competition, cynicism and exploitation of the NYC scene. These comics really enjoy their Hudson Valley shows.
The second type is not nearly as happy to be here. They have left the Mecca of the stand-up world and entered hillbilly hell! They are put off and sometimes creeped out by performing in bowling alleys, VFW halls and backwoods bars. They are nervous about an audience wearing NASCAR jackets and drinking cheap beer. They look over the full room and lament the fact that their careers have led them HERE... to the sticks of "upstate" NY. They will do the set, collect their pay and get back onto the Thruway or Taconic as fast as possible. They don't want to be here, but it's money....
I have worked with both types of comic in my time. I have seen comics that have gotten off stage and stood around talking to local comedy fans for HOURS after the show got out. I have also seen comics that insisted on getting paid before their spot, then walked off stage and into the parking lot to their cars. I don't really understand the second type, but then I am a little biased.
I will agree that next to Las Vegas and L.A., New York is the headquarters of the stand-up scene. Many of the great comics working today come from the NYC area and many young comics from around the country (even the world) wish to make the journey to NYC "where the magic happens" to make a name for themselves. You can't turn a corner in Manhattan without seeing some poster for an open mic or small bar with its own showcase show somewhere. The Big Apple is full of talented people trying to reach the next level. But, when last I checked, no comic ever became a nationally known headliner without leaving the 5 Burroughs. NYC may be where comedy lives, but the outlying areas are what makes or breaks a comic.
A talented comic with 20-60 minutes of good stage time can find gigs around the Hudson Valley and experience what it's like to do a one-nighter in "fly-over country" without leaving the tri-state area. They can go up in front of rednecks, drunkards and the completely socially un-hip and get paid a pretty penny for doing so. Comics can expand their fan base while earning some stripes and making good connections along the way. All they need to do is bend a bit.
In conclusion, I want to tell my friends in the comedy community that real stand-up lives and breathes not only at Carolines and the Comedy Cellar, but also at the Fishkill Bowl, Characters Bar in Sloatsburg and the Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club. You should be H.V. Positive as well! Respect the people who have paid money to see you and want to be entertained. They appreciate you for coming. Do you appreciate them for being there?
And lastly, to JOAN... I'm sorry I made you uncomfortable.

Comic Profile: Eric Albert
ERIC ALBERT
(The comedy world really needs its funny, creative performers to make the people laugh and take our art to new levels. The comedy world also needs business savvy organizers who are able to get rooms, book shows and make these things happen. Every once in a while, we are lucky enough to get both types in one person. The biggest Hudson Valley comedy event of the summer was the brainchild of one of these unique individuals. Just two weeks from the Slaughter Stand-Up Summer Showdown, we sit down with the man himself to discuss the comedy business and the event itself.)
NAME: Eric Albert
HOMETOWN: Sloatsburg, NY
BIRTHPLACE: Richmond Hill, Queens
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE: 2004 but took a 3 year break, I've been back at it since 2011 thanks to the plethora of mics and supportive people in the area.
COMEDY HEROES: George Carlin, Bob Schimmel, Dennis Miller, Bill Cosby, Bill Burr, Ruth Buzzi, Paula Poundstone, Gallagher… the list goes on
PEOPLE AROUND THIS AREA ARE GETTING TO KNOW YOU BY YOUR ASSOCIATION
WITH SLAUGHTER STAND-UP. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT SLAUGHTER IS AND
HOW IT GOT STARTED?
Slaughter Stand-Up is a
close knit comedy family, it started out with Dan DiMarino, Dave Saitzyk
and myself and has grown to include some of the best people in the area,
and by best I mean personally and as a comic. I really appreciate the
level of dedication
all of us put into this little thing that just started out as a way to
brand ourselves but has morphed into an idea, a community, a way for
comics who are just starting out to really make the most out of their
stage time and get paid for what they put so much
of their hard work and time into.
I GOT TO SEE YOUR SET AT DAVE SAITZYK'S OPEN MIC AT A.O.H. IN
MONROE, NY. FIRST OF ALL, I REALLY ENJOY YOUR STUFF. SECONDLY, HOW CAN
YOU LOVE BASEBALL AND STILL BE A METS FAN?
I'll answer your question with a question and ask; how can you love
comedy and say you enjoyed my set? No really thanks man I appreciate it,
I can't wait to see you up on stage, I've heard good things. As far as
the Mets thing goes, I grew up in Queens in
the 80s. I'm a product of my environment, that and I actually hate
myself deep down and must be punished. Ya Gotta Believe!
YOU ARE BECOMING KNOWN NOW NOT ONLY AS A TALENTED COMIC BUT ALSO AS
A VERY SUCCESFUL BUSINESSMAN ON THE COMEDY SCENE, HOW DO YOU BALANCE
BEING A GREAT LOCAL PERFORMER WITH NOW BECOMING A REALLY SUCCESSFUL.PROMOTER OR SHOW RUNNER?
I think you overshot with successful and talented, I would say
moderately passable on both fronts. It's tough, I have no time,
everything is run together on a shoe-string budget. I just consider
myself to be lucky to have found great venues like Character's
with supportive ownership and comics who really care about making the
show the best it can be.
THE BIG SLAUGHTER EVENT OF THE SUMMER IS THE "SLAUGHTER STAND-UP
SUMMER SHOWDOWN" IN SLOATSBURG STARTING JUNE 17, 18, 20 AND 21 AT
CHARACTERS BAR. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
This is the big summer
event for us as a comedy community. I really wanted to do something to
get comics who may not have come across each other at shows,
or even connected thru facebook to have the chance to work with new
people and network in a setting where they're bringing their best to the
table. The 17th, 18th, 20th and 21st are just the 1st round, we still
have the semifinals on the 24th and 25th and
then the finals on the 28th ahead of us. I think its going to shape up
to be an awesome 2 weeks. The finals will have the best 5 from the
contest (what I've dubbed the Slaughterhouse Five) performing for the
chance to get 2 paid headlining gigs, plus Jerrold
Benford headling. Should be bonkers to steal a Ryan Daltonism.
AFTER THE WPDH COMEDY COMPETITION, I THINK PEOPLE ARE A LITTLE
NERVOUS ABOUT THE IDEA OF STAND-UP CONTESTS. AND YET YOU HAVE 64 PEOPLE
ALREADY LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED. WHAT MAKES THIS COMPETITION DIFERENT
FROM THE OTHERS?
This competition is a
little different in the aspect that I actively sought out comics instead
of letting anyone and their mother (who is more than welcome to attend)
get on stage. Granted we have a few 1st timers and guys that are new to
the game but these
are people who have had an itch to do it for a looooong time and we've
given them an opportunity to try it out. I think everyone is looking at
this event as more than a competition, its more of a networking tool and
a way to get some free stage time.
LET'S CUT THROUGH ALL THE B.S. AND GET TO THE QUESTION THAT MEANS
THE MOST TO SO MANY OF US AS COMICS IN THE HUDSON VALLEY... IS THERE ANY
MONOY TO BE MADE OUT THERE BY TALENTED AND DRIVEN INDIVIDUALS OR SHOULD
WE ALL GIVE UP NOW?
Pack it in, there isn't
shit out there. C'mon really? Of course there's money to be found, all
you gotta do is give enough of a shit to try and get yourself more stage
time, more gigs and in my case better material.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO GET MORE INFO ON WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ERIC ALBERT INCLUDING SHOWS AND EVENTS?
That's easy ask my
girlfriend she knows more about what I'm doing on any given day than I
do. But if you wanted a more direct path you could try my facebook
- facebook.com/mediocremarvel or my twitter - @mediocremarvel and don't
forget to check out the Slaughter Stand-Up facebook page cuz it has
more info about lots of comics in the area not just little ol' me. www.facebook.com/SlaughterStandUp
I've said it before. I'll say it again. I believe that in a few years, if you are performing in the Orange County area, Eric Albert will be the one signing your paychecks. I highly recommend that everyone go out and see the Slaughter Stand-Up Summer Showdown at Characters Bar in Sloatsburg. If you are going to pick one day to go, might I recommend Thursday the 20th. No particular reason....

Comic Profile: Stephanie Vanacore
STEPHANIE VANACORE
(The first time I saw this woman on stage, I followed her out into the hallway after her set. Within seconds, I believe, I asked her to be profiled on the "Hudson Valley's Funniest People". Smart as a whip, and just as unforgiving, no one is safe when Stephanie Vanacore is on stage.... Especially not the other comics! After this profile, I felt lucky she hadn't gone after me.)
NAME: Stephanie Vanacore
HOMETOWN: Middletown, NY
BIRTHPLACE: Hospital
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE....:2009-ish
COMEDY HEROES: Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Louis CK, Joan
Rivers, Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Roseanne, Bill Cosby, Mitch Hedberg, Amy
Schumer, Jon Stewart
WE RECENTLY MET IN PERSON AT DAVE SAITZYK'S "LAUGH HOUSE" OPEN MIC
AT A.O.H. IN MONROE, NY. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME THERE AND I SAW SOME GREAT
ACTS. I WAS ALSO VERY IMPRESSSED WITH THE ROOM ITSELF. YOU SEEM LIKE A
REGULAR ON THE SCENE. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT ROOM?
That room can be a rough
at times. Great place to work on dealing with hecklers sometimes good for crowd
work. I mostly look forward to that room as a place to hang out with the crew
and the post-diner wrap up that normally follows.
I WOULD HATE MYSELF IF I DIDN'T ASK THIS.... WHEN YOU MENTIONED
YOUR BOYFRIEND'S NAME ON STAGE, THE ROOM CHEERED. I'M OUT OF THE LOOP.
WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?
My boyfriend Paul Byrne
is one of the founding members of our comedy family. He is the one who first
organized the A.O.H. room, due to his affiliation of being very Irish, and the CV’s
Hideaway room where we both worked together for a while. To know him is to love him and they all know
and love him. In less than a month he
will return and no doubt re-establish his place in this lovely group of funny
folk.
YOU AND I BECAME FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK LONG BEFORE WE ACTUALLY MET
PLAYING "CANDY CRUSH" AND "SONGPOP" ON FACEBOOK. GIVEN HOW ACTIVE YOU
ARE IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA GAMING SCENE, HOW DO YOU ACCOMPLISH SO MUCH AS A
COMIC?
Honestly, Skyrim has
taken way more of my time. Candy Crush
is a newly found shame and I hope I can get over it soon enough so I can devote
more time to my Xbox. I am an unapologetic gamer. I have learned over the years
to schedule in my time wasting and with marginal success towards the greater
good. To answer your question though, I
need to accomplish more as a comic so maybe I should just stick to Words With
Friends.
I LAUGHED QUITE A BIT DURING YOUR SET BUT I TOOK SOMETHING BIG AWAY
FROM IT AS WELL. IN A ROOM THAT INCLUDED ERIC ALBERT, MIKE FALCONE AND
DAN DiMARINO, IT WAS ACTUALLY YOU WHO SHOCKED THE CROWD THE MOST BY SORT
OF ROASTING SOME OF THE OTHER COMICS ON THE LOCAL SCENE. IN A BUSINESS
THAT IS SO MUCH ABOUT NETWORKING, WHERE DO YOU GET THE BALLS TO MAKE FUN
OF YOUR COLLEAGUES?
Where do I get the
balls? Hmmm. I think the same place people get balls telling other people’s
jokes and passing them off as theirs.
Yeah, that place. Or next door to that place. It takes balls to do
comedy, it takes even more balls to write a joke nobody heard before, deliver
it, and get laughs or risk silence. Making
“fun of my colleagues” isn’t something I do often but one of my favorite jokes written
last year was about Ryan Dalton.
IT SEEMS LIKE A GENERAL THEME OF THESE PROFILES TO ASK ABOUT THE
LOCAL COMEDY COMPETTIONS. I KNOW YOU HAVE APPEARED IN MANY WITH REALLY
GOOD RESULTS. DO YOU LIKE THE COMPETITION THING AND WHAT MAKES YOU
PERFORM SO WELL?
The competition shows
are ok. They provide stage time and the opportunity to network. Best case scenario
is you get booked from one; worst case scenario you aren’t happy with your set
and neither is anyone else. Even in
shows where I am ‘competing’ against my friends we still support each other and
motivate each other to be better.
YOU RECENTLY GRADUATED FROM SUNY NEW PALTZ AND ARE CERTIFIED FOR A
"REAL JOB". (I'M JEALOUS). THE QUESTION IS, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF GIVING
UP THE STAGE AND BECOMING A "RESPONSIBLE ADULT" ANY TIME SOON?
I just take the stage
into the classroom. Students pay attention
to teachers who amuse them. Teaching English is a great way for me to keep
writing. Besides, the material I get
working in a school would make it impossible to walk away from standup comedy. It
will be nice to make more than a high school student. I am looking forward to
that part of adult life.
CAN YOU GIVE ME AN OVERALL OPINION ON THE HUDSON VALLEY COMEDY
SCENE AND WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE COMICS WORKING IN THE AREA?
Comedians are some of my favorite people. This has been the most supportive group of
mostly guys I have ever been a part of and I have a lot of favorites. There are also lots of great comics in Albany
that are among some of my ever expanding list of favorites. Working together for years like most of us
have, it’s great that the WPDH competition show has brought together even more area
talent. Gun to my head, favorite local
comic? Bruce Christopher.
To know her is to love her... at your own risk, of course. With recent gigs all over the Hudson Valley area and even a guest DJ spot on WRRV this past Sunday, Stephanie Vanacore is without a doubt one of the rising stars in the area. Rush to any show she is a part of. You'll be glad you did!
REMINDER: Our next post will be a master list of all of the June shows in the Hudson Valley. If you know of any shows, make sure to send the dates and info to me so they can be included on the list.
Also, subscribe to the H.V. Funny Podcast on iTunes or FeedBurner to hear some of your favorite local talents. Until next time, you know the drill... + & X-D -Steve

Comic Profile: John Wendel
JOHN WENDEL
("Sweet, clean, family-friendly, uplifting"... There are just some of the words that describe OTHER comics out there. Not John Wendel. "Shocking, offensive and cringe-worthy" fit a little better. John has been doing comedy for a few years now and has already learned how to push the envelope like few other comics today. However, as a popular name on local shows and a TWO TIME Jester's Champion, its clear you could also use the words "Respected, admired and totally hilarious" to describe him.)
NAME: John Wendel
HOMETOWN: Nyack, NY
BIRTHPLACE: Deer Park, NY
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE....: 2010
COMEDY HEROES: George Carlin, Louie CK, Bugs Bunny, Carol Burnett, Bill Murray, Richard Pryor.
SO, I GOT YOUR NAME FROM A BUNCH OF OTHER COMICS IN YOUR AREA. IT'S
VERY CLEAR THAT YOU HAVE THE RESPECT OF YOUR LOCAL COMEDY PEERS. HOW
DOES THAT FEEL?
It feels swell. I guess I'd have to say "swell." That's how it feels.
Inside. There's a great group of up and coming comics in the area and
I'm honestly humbled that they recognize my supreme talent.
ONE OF THE REASONS YOU WERE RECOMMENDED TO ME WAS THAT YOU WERE A
TWO TIME JESTER'S COMEDY CLUB CHAMPION. DO YOU ENJOY COMPETING AGAINST
OTHER COMICS?
Not particularly. I was hoping to get stage time and that was a way to
get my foot in the door at Jester's which is a cool place to perform. I
dominated the "competition" as you call them but it was more about
trying not to embarrass them too much. I love those guys. And girl.
There's like one girl too.
WHEN I FIRST SAW YOUR VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE, I IMMEDIATELY CATEGORIZED
YOU AS A "CRINGE COMIC". DO YOU THINK THAT'S AN ACCURATE DESCRIPTION? DO
YOU ENJOY THE GROANS AS MUCH AS THE LAUGHS?
Yeah probably. I really enjoy pushing the limits of what can still be
considered funny without just being over the top. I'm pretty much a 12
year old boy on the inside, so bad words and silliness makes me giggle
down in my pee pee parts. I'm not good at being seriously.
TIME FOR A CHEAP PLUG... ARE YOU LISTENING TO THE PODCAST?
Yeah I've listened to it. I think you're off to a great start!
IT SEEMS LIKE A GENERAL OPINION ON THE AREA IS THAT THERE IS A CAMARADERIE AMONG ALL OF THE COMICS. DO YOU ENJOY BEING A PART OF A
COMEDY CREW OR WOULD YOU RATHER BE A LONE WOLF?
No, I like the crew. These guys are my friends. I'm married and not
allowed to have regular friends so they fill that need for me. They are
need fillers and I appreciate that. We joke around a lot and cry
sometimes too. Especially Dan DiMarino. Wtf is that guy always weeping
about?
YOUR PROFILE PAGE SHOWS NOT ONLY PICTURES FROM LOCAL ROOMS BUT NYC
ROOMS AS WELL. CAN YOU COMPARE OR CONTRAST THE HUDSON VALLEY COMEDY
SCENE AND THE NEW YORK COMEDY SCENE FROM YOUR EXPERIENCES IN BOTH?
I will compare but I never contrast: The NYC scene is huge and exciting.
I love performing in NY, crowds are great. The ability to get stage
time is extremely challenging until you've been pounding the pavement
for a long time. The Hudson Valley scene is smaller, but growing and
very talented. And has more trees.
MAN, WHAT IS IT WITH COMICS AND "TREES"? WHEN YOU DO HIT THE LOCAL ROOMS, WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE GUYS TO SEE ON STAGE?
I love Patrick Grable, Tom Liquori is unbelievable, There's an old guy from YouTube, a lot of funny dudes.
WHERE CAN THE PEOPLE FIND MORE INFO ON JOHN WENDEL INCLUDING
UPCOMING SHOWS, BOOKING CONTACTS AND WHO YOU MAY OR MAY NOT BE PISSING
OFF THIS WEEK?
Follow me on Twitter @johnwendelcomic and on Facebook /johnwendelcomedy
A great and witty mind on the scene rigyht now, John Wendel is taking this scene by storm. He was recently described on our podcast as a "steamroller" and it fits! Audiences will be seeing a lot more of John Wendel as we roll on... which MIGHT be bad news for them but it's great news for the rest of us!
I just want to say thanks again to the literally HUNDREDS of people who have been reading what we have been putting out on the HV Comedy Scene. Also, if you enjoy these Comic Profiles then you will LOVE our guests on the H. V. Funny podcast. Click our liks below. Who knows? You might just hear John Wendel on an upcoming episode!

Comic Profile: Anthony Terrible
ANTHONY TERRIBILE
(Anthony Terribile has already accomplished much in the Hudson Valley Comedy scene. He has performed at Levity Live, Bananas and twice at the Serious Laughs Arts & Comedy Festival. He has been featured in an article in the Times-Herald Record. He was a two time regional finalist in the 2013 WPDH Funniest Person in the Hudson Valley Competition and is the current reigning Jester's Comedy Club Champion... Oh yeah. And he's only 14 years-old! How has he accomplished so much in so little time? There's only one way to find out...)
NAME: Anthony Terribile (pronounced) Terr-i-beel
HOMETOWN: Montgomery N.Y.
BIRTHPLACE: New Windsor N.Y.
EDUCATION: Currently enrolled in the 8th Grade at Valley Central Middle School
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE....: Doing Stand-up since July 2011
COMEDY HEROES: Andy Kaufman , Sam Kinison, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay, George Lopez, Jim Norton, Dave Chapelle, Gabriele Iglesias, Chris Rock.
Comedians I have met and had opportunity to speak to include Mark Viera, Colin Quinn, Kevin Lee And the man kicked out of Kingston The very funny Rich Schultis.
LET'S START OFF WITH THE MOST RECENT EXCITING NEWS, WHICH IS THAT YOU ARE THE NEW JESTER'S COMEDY CLUB CHAMPION. YOU MANAGED TO BEAT OUT JORDAN FRIED AND RYAN DALTON (WHO WAS PREVIOUSLY PROFILED ON "THE HUDSON VALLEY'S FUNNIEST PEOPLE"). HOW DID YOU DO IT?
I don’t feel like I beat anyone out. Everyone deserved to be on that stage that night and they all did good. Lots of great comedians have played there. That night I had one of the best sets that I have ever done. I think it is because of all the open mics that I have been doing. That week I did three in a row. I did Virgos Sip N' Soul on Wednesday, then I did CV’s Hideaway on Thursday with Ryan Dalton and then the competition on Friday.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GET STARTED IN COMEDY AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE INSTEAD OF WAITING UNTIL YOU WERE OLDER AS MOST OF US DO?
I thought that if I started early I would be out of drug rehab or at least have a grip on my crack problem by the time I finish High school.
Just kidding the truth is that I have a sister who is 2 years younger than me. She has cerebral palsy. When we were younger my parents and I used to travel all over to different hospitals. When we were at the hospitals there were always other kids who had disabilities like my sister. I always used to make them and their siblings laugh by telling jokes or fooling around.
Than I started doing skits in Boy Scouts. Someone filmed it and sent it to Kevin Lee at Bananas Comedy Club. Kevin Lee than gave me a chance to do an open mic there.
My parents always taught me if I want to do something start young. Professional baseball players don’t start at 21 years old. They start younger to get the training early.
THE FIRST TIME I SAW YOU WAS AT MAHONEY'S IN POUGHKEEPSIE DURING THE WPDH'S COMEDY SEARCH. YOU AND I WERE BOTH FINALISTS ALONG WITH IAN LAZARUS. TELL ME, HOW DID ALL THREE OF US MANAGE TO GET BEATEN OUT BY AN OLD LADY?
I don’t know. You were the only one out of the four of us wearing a dress. LOL
My parents always tell me that it’s not always about who comes in first that wins. I did not come in first that night but Coop and Robin did talk about me on the air and I walked away with two spots on the Serious Laughs Comedy Festival. I think we all won that night.
AHEM... TO CLARIFY, IT WAS A KILT.
YOU MUST BE HUNGRY FOR COMPETITION SINCE I SEE YOU HAVE ALSO SIGNED ON FOR THE SLAUGHTER STAND-UP SUMMER SHOWDOWN IN MID-JUNE AT CHARACTERS IN SLOATSBURG. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL DO IN SUCH A LARGE FIELD OF OTHER COMICS, SOME OF WHOM YOU KNOW TO BE VERY TALENTED?
There are a lot of talented people who will be performing. I don’t do it as a competition I do it to perform. To get stage time. At 14, there are not a lot of places to perform. People need to see me before they take me seriously. Some comedy clubs are worried that I’m going to tell Knock, Knock Jokes.
But now that I have been doing the competitions, I’m becoming known in comedy groups.
MOTHER'S DAY JUST PASSED. THE LAST TIME I SAW YOU, YOU HAD JUST DONE A SHOW IN KINGSTON WHERE THE CROWD GOT A LITTLE HOSTILE AND YOUR MOTHER HAD BEEN THERE TO SEE THE WHOLE THING. HOW DID SHE HANDLE THAT AND HOW IMPORTANT HAS YOUR FAMILY BEEN TO YOUR DEVELOPMENT AS A COMIC?
I did not even know that it was a bad night until other people started saying it. Truthfully that was not as bad as what I have seen .
One night a few months ago at an Irish Pub I was performing at, some drunk guy started calling me a “little Guinea “ in the middle of my set. I tried to ignore him but he kept getting louder.
Than another night at CV’s hideaway some fat redneck with a ZZ Top beard starting yelling at me that he did not like my material. So I asked him if he ever got his beard caught in his boyfriends zipper ,than he laughed . Then I asked him if he would rather I talk about something he knows about - Incest. He then let me finish my set.
My parents were at both of those shows. They understand that its not all going to be easy. That this is something that comes with the territory.
My parents are very supportive of me, but I have to keep all of my school grades up or I can not continue. They say school is always first.
YOU ALSO TOLD ME AT ONE POINT THAT YOU SOMETIMES DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE PERFORMING UNTIL 2 WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME. DO YOU THINK THIS HELPS OR HURTS YOUR ABILITY TO PREPARE SETS?
I think it helps because if I know about it in advance I may get over stressed trying to prepare for it. If I just go and do it, I'm fine. I did not know I was doing WPDH at Mahoney's until the night before.
CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERALL OPINION ON COMICS IN THE HUDSON VALLEY AND MAYBE TELL US WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL GUYS TO WATCH ON STAGE?
The comics overall have been extremely supportive of me most go out of there way to give me advise. There are some that ignore me and keep there distance from me, but I don’t let that bother me.
Dan DiMarino, who is a great comic, let me perform at CV’s Hideaway and he always is very friendly and helpful.
Dave Saitzyk is a really cool guy and great to be around. He is very supportive even though he doesn’t believe Batman survived at the end of Batman: Dark Knight Rises.
Ryan Dalton- is very hard working comic and always leaves it all on the stage.
Brett Eidman is very supportive of me. Its funny because everyone was telling me about a comic that gets punched on stage. My Dad and I watched it and my Dad said ”I know that guy I went to school with him”. Brett is a very talented comic .
I like to watch all the comics. When I do open mics I try to watch as many as I can but Most times I have school in the morning,
I have said it before and I'll say it again. It's entirely possible that in 4 years (or maybe sooner) we'll all be opening for HIM. At 14, I'm pretty sure I was trying my best not to be noticed. This kid is standing on stage in night clubs with a microphone in his hand. Love him or hate him, it's hard not to respect his guts as a performer.

Comic Profile: Ryan Dalton
Ryan Dalton
(This is a first here on the Hudson Valley's Funniest People Blog as I profile someone I have never previously met. Ryan Dalton was recommended to me by several other comics. After seeing some videos online, I was sold. His high-energy delivery and very unique fashion alone make him impossible to ignore. But don't take my word for it. Check him out yourself.)
NAME: Ryan Dalton
HOMETOWN: Garfield, NJ
BIRTHPLACE: Monroe, NY
BEEN DOING COMEDY SINCE: May 2011
COMEDY HEROES: John Cena, Dane Cook, Mitch Hedberg, Steven Wright, Andrew Dice
Clay, David Cross and Patton Oswalt.
Clay, David Cross and Patton Oswalt.
HMM... SHOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE LISTS JOHN CENA AS A COMEDY HERO....
OK. FIRST THING'S FIRST. I GUESS I'M LUCKY HAVING THE LAST NAME "RIFENBURG" BECAUSE PEOPLE RARELY CONFUSE ME WITH OTHERS. BUT IN DOING SOME RESEARCH FOR THIS PROFILE, I NOTICED THAT YOU AREN'T EVEN THE ONLY RYAN DALTON DOING STAND-UP! HAVE YOU RUN INTO ANY PROBLEMS WITH ANY OTHER RYAN DALTONS?
No problems but I did hear a story with him getting mistaken for me. A co worker
of my brothers went to a show at Gotham Comedy club. He was performing and
thought it was me because my brother told her I do comedy. So after the show she
went to him to say he did great job and she knows my brother. She then thought
I was being rude by saying I don't have a brother and have no idea what she's
talking about. A odd exchange for them I'm sure. I definitely want to do a show with
him though.

THE "RYAN DALTONS OF COMEDY TOUR". I'D GO SEE THAT.
AS I MEET MORE COMICS LATELY, I'M NOTICING THAT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THEM ARE BIG FANS OF PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING. WHAT DO YOU THINK DRAWS PEOPLE IN OUR PROFESSION TO "SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT"?
It's basically the same thing... instead of punches... it's punch lines but really
the same rules apply. It's all about the crowd and getting the crowd support.
Connecting with the audience. Having somewhat of a gimmick helps because you
stand out and are remembered. I see them as going hand in hand.

YOU HAVE A VERY HIGH-ENERGY AND APPARENT "STREAM-OF-CONSCIOUSNESS" STYLE ON STAGE. DOES THIS COME NATURALLY TO YOU OR DID YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD AT IT?
It comes naturally (I'm definitely a loony tune) but had to work hard on focusing it
and not running completely off course during my sets.

MY 4 YEAR-OLD SON COMPLAINED TO ME RECENTLY THAT HIS PENIS KEEPS FALLING OUT OF THE Y-FRONT OF HIS UNDERWEAR. ANY ADVICE FOR HIM?
Happens to me all the time. What I do... depending on the weather of course.. I'll
either tuck it into my sock or if its cold out put it up and let the waistband
hold it in place. Shiz will not be jumping out of the y-front after that.

THAT'S BETTER THAN I GAVE HIM. I TOLD HIM TO JUST CUT IT OFF SINCE NOTHING GOOD HAS EVER COME OUT OF MINE... HE'S TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND IRONY.
YOU WERE RECOMMENDED TO ME (ALONGSIDE DAN DIMARINO AND JOHN WENDEL) AS A TWO TIME JESTER'S COMEDY CLUB CHAMPION. DO YOU ENJOY THE COMPETITIONS AND WHY DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE BEEN SO SUCCESFUL?
Love battles! Very WWE like... I cut promos before the shows which hypes it up. (I
love making videos. Which is another creative outlet of mine) Adds another level
of fun I think. If you win...it feels like you just won the world heavyweight
title. Then it motivates you to come out with new material so you can retain the
title. I've won at jesters twice and won at the Spotlite in Scarsdale. I think I
do good because I try to put on a full show. Very animated, silly as can be and
I always get personal with the crowd. Try to create the 007 with them aka the
Bond.

SEE? IT'S NOT JUST AN ACT...
HYPOTHETICALLY, IF YOU WERE IN A COMEDY COMPETITION THIS FRIDAY FACING ANTHONY TERRIBLE AND JORDAN FRIED, WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN?
I am actually in that competition this Friday... Title is on the line.. I'm pumped
up and ready to go. It's the season finale and nothing would make me happier
then to snag that title back. It's going to be one tough battle that's for sure
but Ill be going in guns blazing!

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND MORE INFORMATION ON YOU (AS OPPOSED TO ANY OTHER RYAN DALTON'S THAT MAY BE DOING STAN-UP)?
I'm all over YouTube. DTVPRESENTS would be what you write in the search. It's
got from short films to comedy to top 10 lists to UFC predictions. The cure for
boredom.

Intense, unpredictable and CLEARLY ready for anything, it's easy to see why Ryan Dalton is such a fast climber on the local comedy scene. He's also one of the busiest guys in the area so no doubt he'll be on a show near you very soon.
At this time, I want to think the readers of this blog for making it one of the most successful things I've done in comedy in quite a while. We have had about 500 views in just the first week! Thank you to my fellow comics as well as their fans for making this a success. Here's wishing you positivity and hilarity at every turn.- STEVE

Comic Profile: Dave Saitzyk
DAVE SAITZYK
(I knew early on that I wanted to profile Dave Saitzyk for this. Dave is an entertainer in every sense of the word and clearly one of the hottest names on the H.V. comedy scene right now. I had first heard of him during the WPDH Comedy Search and found some video clips online. Later, I felt it was a good thing I had only come in 2nd place in Poughkeepsie because I didn't have a SHOT against this guy at the finals at Jester's. I've kissed his ass enough though. Why don't we hear from the man himself?)
NAME: Dave Saitzyk, the last name being pronounced the way it's said. Seriously though it's pronounced (Sait-sick)
HOMETOWN: Mahwah, NJ
BIRTHPLACE: Paterson, NJ
COMEDY HEROES: Groucho Marx, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Jim Carrey, Patrice O'Neal, Dice, Dave Chappelle, Benito Mussolini
DAVE, YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON WE'VE INTERVIEWED ON THE HUDSON VALLEY'S FUNNIEST PEOPLE WHO HAS A PENIS. HOW DO YOU FEEL THIS HAS HELPED OR HURT YOU AS A PERFORMER?
I feel like my penis is a constant distraction. I've toyed with the idea of becoming a eunuch, but my penis and I have been through so much together I'd go through separation anxiety.
WE RECENTLY MET AT THE BARDAVON'S SERIOUS LAUGHS FESTIVAL. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FESTIVAL IN GENERAL?
I was blown away by the amount of talented comics who were involved, very impressed by just how extensive the Hudson Valley scene is and thought the Bardovan people did a great job of organizing such a diverse group of very funny people.
WE NEVER WANT TO STUFF A COMIC INTO ONE NICHE, BUT YOUR IMPRESSIONS DO MAKE UP A LARGE CHUNK OF YOUR ACT. WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU HAD A TALENT FOR IMITATION AND WHICH ONE CAME FIRST?
I've done voices my entire life basically, but the first non-accent actual impression would probably be Fire Marshall Bill or any of several of Damon Wayans' characters from In Living Color in elementary school.
HOW BIG OF AN INFLUENCE WAS "IN LIVING COLOR" ON YOUR STYLE AND YOUR DESIRE TO BE IN COMEDY?
In Living Color was heavily influential in developing my style and adolescent sense of humor. That over the top character based sketch comedy struck a chord with me and and instilled in me, the desire to create great characters and be a part of a ensemble like that.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE RE-BUILD SEASIDE HEIGHTS PROJECT AND WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
I was recommended to the Rebuild Seaside people by people involved with the cause who had seen me perform. It's a great show featuring myself, Chris Destefano, Bonnie McFarlane, Rich Vos and Artie Lange on May 25th at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank NJ with all proceeds going to benefit the relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy in Seaside Heights, NJ.
WHEN I THINK OF REDBANK, N.J., I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK OF JAY & SILENT BOB. WERE YOU A FAN OF KEVIN SMITH AT ALL GROWING UP?
Absolutely! Clerks and Mallrats are two of my favorite comedies, I used to watch them obsessively. I still haven't made it to The Secret Stash, but that's what bucket lists are for, lunchbox!
ANOTHER BIG STEP FORWARD IN YOUR CAREER IS YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH MORE LIKE RADIO. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU AND WHERE CAN PEOPLE HEAR YOU?
Being involved with the More Like Radio family is awesome, I've been a guest a number of times on The Cousin Joe Show and after performing at the station's live event April 28th I was asked if I wanted to become a co-host of The Cousin Joe Show, so starting Thursday May 2nd (and every Thursday after) I will be on from 7-10pm at MoreLikeRadio.com and if you're on the road you can check it out on the TuneIn Radio App and search More Like Radio.
SLAUGHTER STAND-UP IS DOING A COMEDY COMPETITION DOWN IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS IN MID-LATE JUNE. HAVING BEEN IN A FEW DIFFERENT COMEDY COMPETITIONS YOURSELF, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT TAKING PART IN THESE TYPES OF THINGS?
Being a part of Slaughter Stand Up personally, I can say that the upcoming competition will be a great opportunity both for exposure and to move into the payed comedy realm. While some comedians are opposed to the competitiveness that these types of opportunities bring, competitions like this are actually alot of fun because they attract a wide array of comics who inspire and motivate you to up your game since they're bringing their best, plus it allows you to network with more comics than any given show can provide.
CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERALL OPINION ON THE STATE OF HUDSON VALLEY COMEDY RIGHT NOW?
Hudson Valley comedy is alive right now! The amount of talented artists would blow anyone away, and they are some of the nicest, coolest, most genuine people you'll ever have the pleasure of hanging with, not to mention the fact that they're funny as hell on and off stage!
WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ON YOU INCLUDING UPCOMING EVENTS?
You can find out show details, booking info, etc at http://www.DaveSaitzyk.com, friend me on Facebook and follow me on twitter @DaveSaitzyk.
Straightforward and to the point. I really like this guy's style. His act is a must-see for anyone in the Hudson Valley area (and beyond). Expect big things from him in the future. Also, make sure to check out https://www.facebook.com/SlaughterStandUp for info on the upcoming Stand-Up Summer Showdown and other events.
As always comments are welcomed and appreciated. Until next time, as always, wishing you positivity and hilarity at ever turn.- STEVE

Comic Profile: Jody Lee
JODY LEE
(If our goal here is to profile the funniest people in the Hudson Valley, then who better to start out with than the winner of WPDH's "Funniest Person in the Hudson Valley Competition" for 2013. Jody Lee has exploded onto the scene in a very short period of time and already has a lot of people talking. Let's get to know a little more about this year's FPHV)
NAME: Jody Lee
HOMETOWN: Highland, N.Y. but I've lived in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Colorado. California, New Mexico, North Carolina and Ohio. No, I wasn't on the lamb. Lambs are not very fast and it would've taken forever to go to all those places.
BIRTHPLACE: Findley, Ohio - Home of Goodyear Tires. You'd think with all that rubber around I wouldn't have happened, but it was the 70's, so....
STARTED COMEDY: HA! This is probably the most interesting thing about anyone wanting to interview me! My first open mic was on November 24th, 2012 at Bananas in Poughkeepsie. When I entered the WPDH competition it was only my 3rd time on stage, and I was lucky enough to tie with Julie Novak, who was amazing! I really didn't think I stood a chance!
COMEDY HEROES: First, definitely Eddie Murphy! When I was about 10 I got hold of his stand up on cassette and my cousins and I listened to them over and over again until we had it memorized. I also have tremendous love for George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Louie CK and Joe Rogan, but if it hadn't been for the positive words of Joey "CoCo" Diaz and his podcast "The Church of What's Happening Now", I would have never gotten up the balls to even try stand up, so he is extra special to me. He is the comedian I'd most like to hug.
I TOO BELIEVE JOEY "COCO" DIAZ IS HIGHLY INFLUENTUAL AND UNDERRATED... YOU AND I MET AT THE BARDAVON'S SERIOUS LAUGHS ARTS & COMEDY FESTIVAL. WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXPERIENCE?
A check! HAHAHA! I also met Patrick Carlin, who is an exceptionally awesome guy and got to see a bunch of my new comedy friends, so it was a great experience. It would have been nice if the venue and crowd were more ready for a comedy show, but I had a great time and hopefully made a few people laugh, which is why I do this in the first place.
A FUN TIME WAS HAD BY ALL... WELL ALMOST ALL...RICH SHULTIS WAS DISMISSED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE FESTIVAL FOR DELIVERING OFFENSIVE MATERIAL AND CREATING A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT WITH THE AUDIENCE. I KNOW YOU ARE ACQUAINTED WITH RICH. ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT DECISION?
I've met Rich and he was a really nice guy to me, so I felt bad he was kicked off. I wasn't at the event, so I don't want to talk out my ass, but based on what I heard when he was on the WPDH morning show on the 29th I think a bunch of factors came into play. First, he arrived late, and that tends to piss people off! It is the responsibility of the performer to get to the show on time. I would imagine it's harder to pull off more "sensitive" material to people who are already angry and it ruins it for everyone involved. However, I've seen him perform before and didn't think it was any more offensive than most other comics I've seen. I don't think any comedian should be censored. The whole point of comedy is to talk about things that people don't normally get to discuss in their daily lives in a humorous light! If what the comedian is talking about offends you, you can get up and leave! If enough people feel the same way and don't laugh or leave the comedian will eventually ditch that bit. Making a spectacle isn't going to fix the world or change anything. Second, I think it's common courtesy as a comedian that if you know you have a bit that is similar to one that the headline comic does you should discuss it with them first, and if you can't, don't use it! Overall, the most important thing is I really hope is that the whole debacle doesn't prevent the Bardavon and UPAC from doing it again next year. This was a really good opportunity for us local comedians to get the word out that comedy is alive and doing well here in the Hudson Valley! I also hope everyone realizes that this was their first time trying to put something like this together, so there is a learning curve. If they do it again, and I hope they do, lighting, sound and making sure that restaurant patrons are made keenly aware of the fact that a comedy show is taking place would make a huge difference for everyone involved. Either way, I had a great time and it was a privilege to be there!
YOU HAVE MORE OR LESS STARTED YOUR COMEDY CAREER RIGHT HERE IN THE HUDSON VALLEY. DO YOU FEEL THAT MAKES THINGS EASIER OR HARDER THAN STARTING IN A BIGGER CITY LIKE NEW YORK OR LA?
Commuting to all the shows can be a bummer, especially with gas prices sucking, but I think we're fortunate enough to have our little stomping ground here as well as New York City close by. I hear there's also a lot going on in New Jersey, too. L.A. has waaay nicer weather, but they're a bunch of weirdos!
YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE GIVES SOME INTERESTING INFO ON YOU. FOR EXAMPLE, ARE YOU REALLY A JEDI?
Nah, more of a Padawan at this point.
WELL THANKS FOR CLEARING THAT ONE UP.
YOU RECENTLY WON THE WPDH FPHV COMPETITION FINALS AT JESTER'S COMEDY CLUB IN CHESTER. BUT ON AT LEAST 2 OCCASIONS, YOU TOLD ME THAT OYU COULD JUST AS EASILY HAVE BEEN CALLED THE "LUCKIEST" PERSON IN THE HUDSON VALLEY. WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?
The title "Funniest Person in the Hudson Valley" drives me nuts! I don't believe anyone can hold that title! I'm way more comfortable with Coop's Comedy Search winner! If I have a bad night or my new material sucks people walk away thinking, "THAT'S the funniest person in the Hudson Valley? We need to move!" I was lucky in that I finally got the nerve to try, have wonderful family and friends who supported me and that the people at the shows enjoyed what I did. Comedy is subjective. What one person thinks is funny another person might think is crap, so luck has a lot to do with it. I am very lucky and grateful! Especially grateful that Coop and Robyn put together the comedy search. Otherwise, a lot of this wouldn't have happened.
WHAT ARE YOUR OVERALL FEELINGS ON THE COMEDY SCENE IN THE HUDSON VALLEY RIGHT NOW?
The comedy scene in the Hudson Valley is amazing! I had no idea how many talented, hilarious people are here! I really wish more people and venues would acknowledge it. It's a really fun night out and unlike going to see a movie you get to have beers!
WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO FIND MORE INFORMATION ON YOU?
I'm on facebook as Jody Lee and my email address is jodylee4u@gmail.com. No website yet but hopefully soon!
WELL THERE YOU HAVE IT. AN INSTANT SUCCESS BUT STILL HUMBLE ENOUGH NOT TO LET HER MONTH OR SO OF SUCCESS GO TO HER HEAD. THAT'S A NICE THING TO SEE.

H.V.Funny Takes Off!
Welcome to H.V.Funny!
This past weekend was the final weekend of The Bardavon/UPAC's first annual Serious Laughs Arts and Comedy Festival in Kingston. For the first time that I can remember, the Hudson Valley was host to a legitimate comedy festival. Actual NYS grant money was used to fund this event and I think we are all pleased that stand-up comedy has been recognized as a real art form.
The shows, held at various venues throughout the Kingston area, were largely very successful. The crowds were energetic and attentive, the comics were witty and wild, and the drinks were cold and refreshing. Who could ask for more?
As a comic who performed at 3 of these shows, I felt privileged to be amongst so many fun and talented people. I was PARTICULARLY impressed with several young men and women who were also competitors in the recent WPDH Funniest Person in the Hudson Valley Contest. They had all reached the final stages in their respective regions and showed why they belonged in a serious comedy festival like this one.
After a few of the shows, I found myself talking to some of my fellow comics and found that we were all struck by the amount of talented people living right here under our noses. We realized that we could be of great help to one another through mutual respect and support. We are all now friends on Facebook and stay in touch, informing one another of upcoming shows and opportunities.
If I accomplish nothing else, I want to let anyone who reads this blog know just how many talented and genuinely funny people we have living right here in the Hudson Valley. I hope that through this blog, you get to learn a thing or two about these comics and hopefully you will be lucky enough to get out there and see them in person.
I'm hoping they will all start out something like this...
NAME: Steve Rifenburg
HOMETOWN: Hyde Park, NY
BIRTHPLACE: Poughkeepsie, NY
YEARS IN COMEDY: 6
COMEDY HEROES: Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, Bernie Mac
In addition to fun comedy profiles, I hope to do a little Q&A with each comic to get to know a bit of how their twisted little minds work. Expect the first very soon!- STEVE
